The
State
Theatre
The State Theatre is located in the heart of the Detroit
Theatre
District. Built in 1925, it is a major work of one of the
nation's
most illustrious architects, C. Howard Crane. The opulent
Renaissance classical style continues to make it one of the
most
desirable venues in the area. Indeed, the State is one of the
few
theatres in the district to have enjoyed continuous
operation.
A visit to the State reveals the breathtaking detail and
craftsmanship of a bygone era. The original white marble
horseshoe
staircase leads to leaded glass doors in shimmering tones of
blue,
gold and ruby. The towering two-story Corinthian columns with
gilded
capitals support a barrel-vaulted ceiling focusing on an
exquisite
crystal chandelier. Every surface is elaborately decorated in
gilded
plaster or hand-painted detail. The auditorium is the
impressive
heart of the theatre. Here the remarkable decor includes domed
ceiling, recessed light panels, intricate leaded glass and two
remarkable, larger-than-life-size gilded statues of Medieval
Knights
flanking the stage.
The systematic and ongoing restoration, begun in 1989,
combines a
commitment to the grandeur of the theatre with an updated
approach
to function. The State is now unparalleled in the area as a
meeting
and entertainment center, largely due to its vast array of
technical
capabilities.The permanent audio-video-lighting installation
is the
most sophisticated of its kind in the nation, and features a
computer-controlled 64-monitor video wall that provides a
breathtaking backdrop for both business and entertainment
presentations.
The State can comfortably seat 2200 guests for shows and
meetings,
although it often hosts upwards of 3000 guests for more
informal
social events. The facility features twelve full-service bars,
flexible lighting and seating arrays, large restrooms, and
ample
well-lit parking. For more information call
